Belgians are the biggest cava drinkers in the world 

Brussels June 12, 2024 – With more than 22 million bottles of cava per year, Belgians are by far the biggest cava drinkers in the world. The Germans, at number 2, and even the Spaniards, at number 3, do not come close when we look at consumption per capita. Gran Barón, which has been available on the Belgian market for more than 20 years and has a market share of almost 30%, would like to thank Belgian cava drinkers for their loyalty: when the Belgians become champions in Germany, Gran Barón will celebrate with no less than 1,000 bottles of cava! 

60 glasses of cava per minute ​  

20 years ago Gran Barón landed in Belgium. Vallformosa, the Spanish company behind the popular bubbles, joined forces with Colruyt to introduce the cava to the Belgian market. Today, two decades later, as many as 60 glasses of Gran Barón are served per minute. This makes Gran Barón the undisputed market leader in Belgium with a market share of 27.6% (Nielsen 2023-2024).

“We are proud that we have been a fixture in Belgian households for 20 years. I think we can say that we taught Belgians to drink cava” laughs Ricard Romero Vinaches, Marketing Director at Vallformosa. 

Belgians are the biggest cava drinkers in the world  

Belgium is the country with the largest per capita consumption of cava in the world, with around 1.85 bottles per inhabitant, of which 0.57 bottles of Gran Barón cava. The Belgians are followed by Spain and Germany with 1.66 and 0.37 bottles of cava per inhabitant respectively. Converted, this means that 60 glasses of cava are consumed every minute in Belgium. 

Approximately 22,079,000 bottles of cava are sold annually in Belgium, after Spain and Germany - with 80,936,000 and 31,132,000 bottles sold respectively - good for the third place in the ranking. Moreover, of all cava sold in Belgium, 6,093,804 bottles are of Gran Barón. 

Celebrating victory with 1,000 bottles of cava ​  

To thank loyal Belgian customers and celebrate a successful football tournament, Gran Barón cooled no fewer than 1,000 bottles of cava, which will be uncorked en masse after the Belgians' victory in Germany.

“It is fantastic to see how loyal Belgians are to our brand and with this campaign we would like to give something back. That's why we designed a refrigerator ourselves with a capacity of 1,000 bottles of Gran Barón. If the Belgians win, we will treat them to bubbles,” said Ricard Romero Vinaches. “If another country wins, the bottles go to the supporter community of that specific country here in Belgium.”

The bubbles are already cool for July 14!
